On the eve of 400th Anniversary of first Parkash Utsav of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, under the leadership of Vice Chancellor S. Swarn Singh Boparai, Syndicate of Punjabi University, Patiala, established an independent Department of Gurmat Sangeet.In this field Recognising

the contribution of renowned scholar and musician Dr. Gurnam Singh, Punjabi University authorities designated him as Founder Professor & Head.
On August 4, 2004, Singh Sahib Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti inaugurated the post-graduate course in Gurmat Sangeet. The main objective of this Department is comprehensive academic propagation of Sikh Sacred Music tradition at global level through teaching and research.

Being a new academic discipline and accepting the challenge of non availability of study material of Gurmat Sangeet, the Department has prepared following text books for the students.

Monographs
  To inspire the students and researchers from their legendary musicians, a project dedicated to the life and contribution of various Keertankaars is also in progress. This project includes the name of following revered Raagi.

Revival of String Instruments

For the promotion of raga based keertan original?exclusive tradition the revival of string instruments of sikh music is fundamental academic requirement of this department for this purposeRevival of String Instruments of Gurmat Sangeet is fundamentally required for this tradition. Department of Gurmat Sangeet is successfully set off for the training of original string instruments. The training of one string instrument is compulsory for every student of the Department in their post-graduate and under-graduate syllabi. The Department is facilitating this tradition through different training programmes.

On 24-25 March, 2006, with the initiative of Jathedar Avtar Singh, President, Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Dr. Gurnam Singh, Founder Professor & Head, Gurmat Sangeet Chair performed Keertan with all string instruments which became a regular practice of Sri Darbar Sahib. Various students from Department of Gurmat Sangeet, Punjabi University Patiala and other institutions have been recruited by Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Amritsar as string instrument players. The Department is regularly organizing Keertankaar Training Programmes for the newly recruited Keertankars of Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Amritsar and other organizations.

Along with teaching program, some prominent string instrument players including S. Shaminderpal Singh Sarangi Vadak and Sh. Amandeep Singh Taus Player are also doing their P.hD. research on the string instrument tradition of Gurmat Sangeet. With these humble efforts, Department is proudly leading the revival movement of string instruments at global level.
